Why a Standard Screen Door Doesn’t Work on a Front Door

Most people who call us have already tried the hardware store version. It slammed, scratched the door, looked cheap from the street, or simply didn’t fit an outswing door at all. Here’s what makes a front entry different from a back patio — and why it needs a different solution.

There when you need it. Gone when you don't.

The screen rolls into a 2-inch housing on the side of your door frame. When you don’t need it, it’s in there. From the street, there’s no screen door. No hardware. No grid of aluminum across your entry. Walk up to your front door — it looks like a door.

HOAs don’t flag what they can’t see.

A traditional screen door on a front entry is an HOA complaint waiting to happen. A retractable retracts completely into a slim housing against the door frame. The housing is powder-coated to match your trim. Most HOAs approve them without a second look — because from the street, there’s nothing to flag.

One door. One motion. No fumbling.

With French entry doors and two separate screens, you’re dealing with two things every time you walk through. Our long-pull option runs a single screen across the full opening — one pull from the cassette all the way to the far side, one latch. Same going back out. That’s it.

Fits doors no standard screen door can.

Front doors come in sizes no hardware store product accounts for — oversized single panels, doors with sidelights, arched frames. Apollo measures to 1/16” and builds to your exact opening. If it’s a door, we can screen it.

What Is a Retractable Front Door Screen?

It's a screen door that's invisible when you don't need it. The screen rolls into a slim 2-inch aluminum housing mounted on one side of your door frame. Pull it across when you want fresh air and bug protection. Let go and it rolls back in — slowly, no slamming.

When retracted, your front entry looks exactly the same as before. No screen blocking your view, no hardware hanging off the door frame. Visitors don't see a screen door at all. That's why homeowners also call them invisible screen doors, disappearing screen doors, and pocket screen doors — different names, same product.

It also solves a problem most people don't realize they have until they're shopping: outswing doors. If your front door swings outward, a traditional hinged screen door would swing right into it. A retractable screen mounts to the side of the frame and never interferes — regardless of how your door swings.

Why Homeowners Choose Apollo for Front Door Screens

We’ve been building and installing screens for over 20 years. In that time we’ve figured out what fails and why. Here’s what we built differently.

Built to your door. Not to a standard size.

Our tech measures your frame on-site. The screen is built from those numbers. If your opening is 36-1/8″, that’s what we build. Nothing shimmed, nothing stretched. A screen that fits properly retracts cleanly — and keeps retracting cleanly.

Slow-close. Never slams.

Spring-loaded screens snap back hard. Ours has a patented speed reducer in the cassette that controls how fast it retracts. You let go and it comes back slow and even. No slam, no caught fingers, no paw pinch. Tension is adjustable — our tech sets it at install.

7 colors. Custom match if you need it.

When the screen is retracted, the only thing visible is the 2-inch housing against your door frame. It has to match your trim or it looks wrong. Seven powder-coat stock colors cover most homes. If yours doesn’t match, we’ll match to your exact paint or RAL code.

Lifetime warranty. Built in the USA.

Frame, cassette, mechanism, hardware — covered for life. Every screen is built in the USA after your on-site measurement. Not a kit, not a standard size — yours, built to spec.

Screen Door for Every Front Entry Configuration

Single entry door, double French entry, or outswing — Apollo builds a custom screen door for your specific front door, regardless of size or swing direction.

Single Entry Door

The most common front door configuration. A single retractable screen mounts to one side of the frame with a slim housing cassette — the screen pulls across one-handed and locks into the magnetic closure. When retracted, the housing is barely visible against the trim. Works whether your door swings in or out.

Double & French Entry Doors

Two screens that each retract into their own housing on opposite sides of the frame, meeting in the middle with a magnetic seal. You get full coverage without blocking either door panel. Apollo is one of only two manufacturers that can cover the entire opening with a single screen on select configurations — because our slow-close mechanism means no slamming at the center.

How a Retractable Front Door Screen Works

Every Apollo retractable front door screen has four main components: the housing cassette, the mesh screen, the guide tracks, and the slow-close mechanism.

Housing cassette: A 2-inch aluminum profile that sits flush against your door frame. When the screen retracts, this is all anyone sees — and on most homes it disappears into the trim entirely. Your front entry looks exactly like it did before the screen was there. Seven powder-coat colors to match, or custom-matched to your exact paint code.

Mesh screen: A custom-formulated insect mesh that's stiff, durable, and practically invisible from a distance. Keeps bugs out, lets air through, and doesn't block your view.

Slow-close mechanism: This is what separates a quality screen from a cheap one. Apollo's slow-close system retracts the screen at a controlled, even speed — no sudden snap-back, no slamming, safe around kids and pets. The magnetic closure holds the screen sealed when extended.

Front Door Screen Colors & Finishes

The housing cassette is the only visible part when the screen is retracted — it's critical that it matches your door trim. Apollo front door screens come in 7 stock powder-coat colors that cover 90% of home trim colors. Need an exact match? We offer custom color matching to any RAL or paint code.

Frames are 6063 T6 aluminum with a baked-on powder-coat finish — not spray paint, not anodized. It resists chipping, peeling, and UV fading. The housing sits tight against your trim and most visitors never notice it's there.

Front Door Screen — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best screen door for a front door?
A retractable screen door. It solves every problem a traditional screen door has at a front entry: it disappears when not in use (so it doesn't ruin your curb appeal), it works on outswing doors (where hinged screens physically can't go), and it doesn't slam. Apollo retractable front door screens are custom built to your exact frame from 6063 T6 aluminum with a lifetime warranty — not a kit product.
Will my HOA approve a retractable front door screen?
In almost every case, yes — and that's exactly the point. HOAs typically restrict "screen doors" because they mean the permanent hinged kind that hangs on your front entry and changes the look of the home. A retractable screen disappears into a 2-inch housing when not in use. The housing is powder-coated to match your door trim. From the street, it's invisible. Most HOA boards approve them on first review because they don't affect curb appeal. If your HOA requires written approval, we can provide product specs and photos showing the retracted profile.
What's the difference between a two-screen system and a long pull French door screen?
A two-screen system uses two separate screens that each retract into their own housing on opposite sides of the door frame, meeting in the middle when extended. A long pull screen uses a single oversized screen that spans the full opening in one pull and latches on the far side. The long pull option means no center gap and a cleaner look, but it requires a wider housing and a slow-close mechanism capable of handling the extra screen width — Apollo is one of very few manufacturers that can do this reliably.
Will a front door screen affect my home's curb appeal?
No — that's the main advantage. When retracted, an Apollo front door screen disappears into a 2-inch aluminum housing on the door frame. From the street, you'd never know it's there. The housing is powder-coated to match your door trim. 7 stock colors cover most homes, and we offer custom color matching to any RAL or paint code if you need an exact match.
Do retractable front door screens work in windy conditions?
In light to moderate wind, yes. The mesh is held taut by top and bottom guide tracks with pile weatherstripping, which keeps it sealed and minimizes flutter. In strong wind, retract the screen — just like you'd close a window in a storm. Apollo's slow-close mechanism means it retracts safely without slamming even when it's windy.
Can I put a retractable screen on any front door?
In virtually all cases, yes. Apollo builds custom screens for standard single entry doors, oversized doors, French entry doors (two-screen or long pull), and doors with sidelights. Every screen is measured to your exact frame at your home. The only situation where it may not be possible is if the door frame is severely damaged or has no usable mounting surface on either side — your dealer will identify that during the free measurement visit.
What's the difference between a retractable front door screen and a storm door?
A storm door is a permanent glass door that provides weatherproofing year-round. A retractable screen rolls away completely when not needed and is designed for airflow and bug control — not insulation. If your priority is fresh air and keeping bugs out without a permanent door on your front entry, a retractable screen is the better choice. If you need cold-weather insulation or security glazing, a storm door makes more sense. Many homeowners have both.
How much does a front door screen cost?
A professionally installed Apollo retractable front door screen typically runs $550–$950 for a standard single entry door. Double or French entry door systems range from $900–$1,600+ depending on configuration and size. Your Apollo dealer will measure on-site and give you an exact price on the spot — free, with no obligation. Call (855) 530-1246 or find your local dealer at apolloscreen.com.
How long does front door screen installation take?
Most single front door installations take under one hour. The process includes mounting the housing cassette to the door frame, cutting and beveling the top and bottom rail channels to your door width, installing the handle, and fitting the magnet closure system. Your dealer does a full walk-through with you before leaving. From the measurement visit to installed screen is typically within the same week in most markets.
Is a retractable front door screen worth it?
Yes. It solves the specific problem of wanting fresh air through your front door without bugs, without blocking your view, without a door that slams, and without something ugly hanging on your front entry. Apollo screens have a less-than-2% service rate and a lifetime warranty. Most homeowners who call us tried a big-box retractable kit first — the difference in fit, finish, and longevity is significant. And the ones with outswing doors have no other option that actually works.
